And it intrigued me.
It typifies that mysterious part of Los Angeles that seems to exist in another era -- and in this era at the same time. Perhaps its the retro architecture, or perhaps it's their comfort-food menu that's always in style no matter what people are wearing, be it poodle skirts or faux-hawks.
In any case, I was down for a cheeseburger, and this 24/7 eatery in West Hollywood (among other SoCal locations) was ready to provide a 1/2 pound of cheesy goodness. (Ian decided on the healthier soup and salad.) We also went on a Tuesday, when kids eat free. So CC swung for Hey, Batter Batter (aka fried fish fillets).

We had a great time at the place referenced in Tom Waits' song "Eggs and Sausage." The place, on a rainy(!) and cold L.A. night, was not very crowded, which helped with some nighttime grumps from the *cough* toddler *cough*. The staff was friendly and smiled through our Terrible Twos pain.
It was also fun eyeing the menu, which noted the 60th anniversary of Norms. Apparently, Meryl Streep was also born the same year as Norms, in 1949, when the average yearly income was less than $3,000 and housing prices were a mere $7,500.
That last fact almost made me choke on my sesame-seed bun.

Favorite memory of Norms? Let's see, I have lots of them because when I was 17, I got a job there as a food server. I worked there with my best friend. Okay, now I feel old. It was 1996, the morning after Christmas. All the servers called in sick except for me and my best friend. The place was packed, just like it is on the weekends. We were the only two working the floor and we were slammed! Our manager came in, but she had a CRAZY commute from Palm Springs. So by the time she got there, the rush was over. I will never forget that day. We made a lot of money and needed several margaritas to recover from the madness.
ReplyDeleteWhat is not to love about Norm's? There are so many good meals to choose from. When I think of breakfast, I think of the Veggie Omelet that comes with avocado. YUMMY!! I think of their perfect pancakes & you can't forget the french toast. Absolutely scrumptious! Friday nights means it is a definite serving of the clam chowder soup regardless the weather or season. Of course this with a steak & shrimp dinner. Oh Norm's, if only you would come to San Bernardino County. I miss you :0(
ReplyDeleteThey have lots of great things on the menu, but I always look forward to the Super Scooper Schooner Sundae.

ReplyDeleteI love the veggie omlet with fresh fruit and pancakes. I always think I'm going to be too full for the pancakes... But surprisingly, there's always room! :)
ReplyDeleteI always remember going to Norms in those crazy allnighters of college days. Still love the chef's salad! And your soups are some of the best around! My friends and family meet at your restaurant, at least, monthly, sometimes more often. Thanks for being there and having such good food and great prices!
